Dora was born in Houston, Texas. Growing up, she spent a considerable amount of time with her grandparents and
other relatives in Rayne, Louisiana. On one particular occasion, when she was
visiting an aunt, she noticed an old accordion that was falling apart and in a
stack of what her aunt called "trash." Dora picked it up and started making
noise, hardly knowing then how much the accordion would become a part of her
life in the future.
Sometimes Dora would hear Zydeco music played by her grandfather and uncles, all
talented musicians in their own right. Nevertheless, like many zydeco musicians
she did not become seriously or consistently involved in playing Zydeco and
Blues music until later in life when the death of one of her sons proved to be
the catalyst that motivated her. She decided to heed her sons Kevon's last
words, "Have Fun Mama." What better fun than to dance and play the good time
music and dance of Zydeco.
What came next was no coincidence. Dora says, "I'm not sure why, but one night
when I walked into The Old Talk of the Town Club and saw a musician playing the
accordion and the way it sounded, I knew then that I wanted to play the accordion
myself, it just seemed like so much fun." Shortly thereafter, at the request of
a friend, she went to the renowned Breaux Bridge festival and fell in love with
Zydeco. The rest, as they say, is history.
Dora decided to form her own band in 1997. Dora and the Zydeco Badboys consist
of Dora on accordion, Montanya Charles(MeMe) on scrubboard, Marcus Jackson on
Drums, Greg Simms on guitar, and Vonn 'Houseman' Morris on bass. The band has performed
at the largest festivals, including Gator By The Bay, Fort Lauderdale, Moodus CZ Fest,
and the Beale Street Zydeco Festival.
The band's current CD is "Dora's Time". It was released earlier this year and has been
warmly received. If you want to have a foot-stomping
Zydeco Good time, this is a great CD to add to your dance collection and a band
you can't afford to miss the next time you are out two-stepping.
Dora and the band are very intereested in branching out and bringing their brand
of Zydeco to true Zydeco lovers throughout the country. If you are interested
